ABOUT

About

I have been practicing law since 1990, Family Law exclusively since 2000. I have been a Certified Family Law Specialist, State Bar Board of Legal Specialization for over ten years. I believe that most cases can be settled with reduced emotional cost to the parties involved.

I grew up in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada, on the shores of Lake Huron, and attended Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. I graduated in 1975 with a BA in Economics which led to a career in economic forecasting and systems design for a software company. Those jobs brought me to California in the early 1980’s where I returned to school to study law. I graduated from the University of San Francisco, School of Law, Cum Laude, in 1990.

Family Law Attorney Brent Seymour

After working as a commercial litigator for two of the largest firms in California, I realized I preferred the more personal challenges of family law.  For the last 15 years, I practiced at one of the most prestigious family law firms in San Francisco. In 2013, I opened the Law Office of Brent D. Seymour in Benicia. I continue to also practice in San Francisco.

My practice involves all aspects of family law and in particular, complex financial issues that arise in high asset dissolutions. When necessary, I partner with financial and other experts to resolve complex matters.

In addition, I have developed an expertise in international cases involving the Hague Convention for return of children wrongfully abducted or retained outside of their habitual residence. Similarly, I have particular expertise in interstate and international custody cases involving the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction Enforcement Act (UCCJEA).

I have presented seminars on International Divorce Practice and on Practice under the Hague Convention to family law attorneys both locally and internationally.

I am a Fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers (IAFL). The IAFL is a worldwide association of practicing lawyers who are recognized by their peers as the most experienced and skilled family law specialists in their respective countries. (www.iaml.org) Fellowship in the IAFL is by invitation after a vote of the membership.

In addition to the IAFL, I am a member of the San Francisco and Solano County Bar Associations, as well as the Association of Certified Family Law Specialists, a non-profit organization of attorneys who have been designated Specialists in Family Law by the State Bar of California, Board of Legal Specialization.
